This is not just a Vacation, it Truly is an Adventure! If Making Memories is a Goal, Relaxation and Rejuvenation a Priority, and you have a Quest for Adventure to push your limitations to the maximum - then YOU are going to have the time of your life!
First and foremost, you will want to be a traveler who immerses oneself into the Culture and the Experience of this small diverse country. Costa Rica is thriving, and growing daily! As we grow so does the Infrastructure.
Imagine stepping back in time to rural America, maybe Key West in the 1930's......Fresh Fruits from Heaven......Majestic Sunsets on the Pacific......but rough dirt roads and a minimal variety of stores, gas stations, and restaurants in certain areas. Roads are being paved as we speak, having come 1/3 of the way from the Airport to Marbella in only 2 years, and bigger projects are planned in 2017. Electricity is 100% Renewable and Natural, but rolling power surges are very common in Marbella ( we recommend bringing a surge protector for your electronic devices ). Spanish is the Primary language, and in many small towns English translators are few, so brush up on your basic Español for simple things like asking directions.
For your time here in Marbella, plan to travel over an hour to Santa Cruz for your shopping needs. Stores are limited so we highly encourage you to bring all the luxuries, amenities, sunscreen and personal hygiene items, even favorite snacks you may want. Best to pack for the stay, hassle free.
Be sure to notify your Bank and Credit Card companies of your travel abroad to Costa Rica. Your Credit Cards should work everywhere once your company makes note of your travel plans. Debit is not as widely accepted, so plan accordingly. In Costa Rica, the money system is Colones and the exchange rate varies by the day. Use the XE Live Currency Exchange rate for your stay: http://www.xe.com/
ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT:
Liberia (LIR) International Airport is a lovely, small, immaculate airport that will be easy to navigate. It is recommended to fly in here and make the shorter 90 minute drive to Sanctuary Retreat, compared to the 5-6 hours from San Jose.
The majority of flights from the United States to Costa Rica originate with JETBLUE, SOUTHWEST, DELTA, and AMERICAN. Upon arrival to Liberia Airport, follow the signs bringing you briefly through the concourse then downstairs to Immigration/Customs. Have your passports ready, and a little patience. All flights can arrive at once so the line may seem long but move fairly quickly. With a smile and a stamp, maybe a question or 2, you are on your way. Once through, pass into the Luggage area where there is a Bank for exchanging currency and a kiosk for a Rental Car company. There is a percentage fee for currency exchange. Note: US Dollars are valued here and taken at some store and restaurant locations.
THE DUTY FREE SHOP:
It is hard to find Liquor or Wine cheaper anywhere else, and it is your privilege to purchase up to 7 bottles. To save on cost, we suggest you purchase your vacations libations here! They will box them for you for easy transport.
Now grab your luggage and follow the traffic to the final checkpoint, where you will put everything through a scanner one last time. Do NOT carry fresh food, agriculture or other banned items to get quickly out the door to the Main Lobby. At this point you will be made many offers to assist you with your luggage. If you choose this service, it is custom to tip $1 - $2/bag U.S. dollars.
Hopefully your Transportation was previously arranged but if not, there are options. Take a private Taxi or Limo service from the Airport to a Rental Car operation, located from ½ to 4 miles away. If travelling by Taxi or Limo to The Sanctuary, this will average around $130 + tip for the trip. Rental Car employees will be waiting sign in hand with customer names if your vehicle is prearranged.
If a member of the Sanctuary Staff picks you up, they will be in uniform and have a sign with your name awaiting your arrival.
** DISTANCE from the Liberia Airport to your Sanctuary Retreat is over 90 minutes, close to half which covers rough dirt roads. Be sure you’re well hydrated and have eaten prior to your arrival as options are limited. Along your drive you will see many small convenience stores, or ‘Sodas’, as they are called as well as roadside bars and ceviches. Thankfully, there are no drive thru's or fast food chains on your journey into Paradise!
Costa Rica has a consistent temperature High/Low of 90 degrees C./70 degrees C. Being this close to the Equator, the sun is closer and far more intense than you may be used to. Reapplying sunscreen often and staying hydrated will ensure a comfortable and relaxing experience.
As you will soon see, it is no wonder Costa Rica is considered the “happiest place on earth!”
